Being Prepared: Scouting the Wedding Location in Advance

“A Portrait Is Forever

I created this wedding portrait at the luxurious Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. One of the first things I do when I arrive at a wedding venue, before I put on my cameras and go to the bride and groom, is to walk around and look for interesting spots. I then take a picture on my cell phone to show the bride or groom my vision before we venture off for their portraits.

“When I found these cool chairs, I knew we had something interesting to work with. The hotel is historic, and so this painted portrait in the background lent itself nicely.”

The capture was relatively straightforward. It’s just one light camera-left with a Profoto A10 inside a Clic Softbox (highly recommend, this setup takes just seconds). It was handheld by my assistant. I took two frames — one with the light up close to the bride, one up close to the groom, and then masked my assistant out of each shot.

This was shot on Canon R6 with a Canon 24-70 f/2.8 at 2.8, ISO 400, 1/200.  I simply exposed for the ambient light and then brought my exposure down 1-2 stops.
