Three Simple Rules of Life

Intro by Skip Cohen

Wandering through the archives of Justin and Mary Marantz’s blog I found this little gem. It got me thinking about the challenges so many of you have with content for your blog. The truth is many of you make it harder than it needs to be.

Don’t be afraid to share a little of your personal side in a post now and then. Sharing the personal side of life in a blog post is one of the things I love about Mary. She writes from the heart, even when it’s a post about photographic technique.

A few years ago I talked my then 89-year-old Dad into writing a guest post. Well, Dad has long since passed away, but that post is still one of my most read. It was also great advice and proved a point about how little has changed regarding honesty, trust and holding the focus on dreams and goals.

Mary shared a great little email from her Dad with some perfect advice. So, if you’re stuck looking for content now and then, search “Quotes about life” in Google. You’ll be amazed at how many ideas you’ll come up with to write about in your blog and tie them to photography, family and the love you have for working with your clients.

The bottom line is easy to understand – don’t be afraid to share your passion for life in your posts. Your target audience needs to get to know you. They want to know why you love this business and in turn life. A post now and then that’s entirely off track from imaging, is a perfect ingredient to add to your social media presence.

Yesterday my dad sent me this. When I opened up my inbox and found it sitting there I nearly burst into tears. Insta-tears. Julia Roberts ugly cry tears. Because it was exactly what I needed to hear. And my guess is…some of you might need to hear it too. So here it is, just in case.

Three Simple Rules of Life:

  1. If you do not go after what you want you will never have it.
  2. If you don’t ask, the answer will always be “No!”
  3. If you do not step forward you’ll always be in the same place.

Mary closed with a contest for her readers: “Tell me one thing you are going to 1) go after, 2) ask for, and 3) take a step forward.”
