I ran across this post in Bob Coates’ archives, and while NILMDTS typically does a recruitment campaign later in the year, I wanted to share it here now. I’ve been a NILMDTS Ambassador for several years, and Bob has been one of their photographers for a whole lot longer.
While most people initially think there’s no possible way they could ever help a family at a time of such extreme sadness, every artist who I’ve talked with from the NILMDTS team talks about how it’s changed their lives. It’s not about the appreciation for their skill set as much as it is the support people feel at having a child they’ve just lost recognized as a member of their family. The photographer becomes an important part of the grieving process and the images they capture become cherished family treasures.
In one guest post several years ago by a NILMDTS photographer on my blog, the mother of the baby that died commented about how important the photographs were to her and her family. It was one of the highest compliments a photographer could receive.
Giving back is one of the most important things you can do in running a business, especially as a photographer. So, whether it’s NILMDTS or another nonprofit in your community, find the time to help make a difference in other people’s lives.
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

A gift that is very moving.
One that can only be given at a moment in time.
The gift of Professional Family Portraiture to a family that is losing a child at birth… Is priceless.
It’s recruitment month at Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep and I encourage you to consider becoming an affiliated photographer. There is a tremendous need. When I first heard about the organization and its mission I thought, “There’s NO WAY I could ever do that!” Eventually, after attending a seminar put on by Sandy Puc I decided to try. Over the years I’ve been with the organization in many roles, as a photographer, trainer, board member & image reviewer as I see this is an amazing way to give back to the community.
You can do it.
Is it easy? Nope
Is it rewarding? Yep
“Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is one of those ways that I enjoy serving my community as a photographer. When a Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep call comes in, I remember why I love photography.”
