How Print Competition Makes Your Work Explode With Growth

Photography competitions offer a wealth of opportunities, from exposure and recognition to Chances for personal growth and exciting prizes. However, they also come with their own set of challenges, including stress, subjective judging, and potential creative constraints.

For photographers looking to build their portfolios and challenge themselves, competitions can be a rewarding experience-especially when compared with the invaluable feedback that comes from judges. Participating in competitions, particularly those like PPA’s monthly merit reviews, provides an excellent opportunity to learn, listen, and improve your craft over time.

That said, it’s essential to enter with realistic expectations and a mindset focused on growth rather than solely on winning. If you decide to participate, approach it with balance and the opportunity to learn and improve, but remember that the joy of Photography should always come first, whether you win or not.

I have recognized this through competition. My craft has improved, and I give much credit for my growth to PPA’s MIR, provided by PPA. These reviews have been crucial to me and my photographic growth. I truly believe constructive criticism, or should I say push, helps to refine our skills; it was that way for me. I wouldn’t have been able to reach a Bronze at Imaging USA 2025 without truly listening to what the MIR judges said. Through that, I was able to correct myself.

So, to answer the top question that we started with, I say YES!
