“If you wait for all the lights to turn green, you’ll never get started on your journey!“
Zig Zigler
I’m always surprised by how people see a new year as a clean slate and a chance to start over, and then make the same mistakes they did in the past. Sure, it’s a new year, but only as far as the IRS is concerned.
So, I’m kicking off my first Marathon post for 2026 with a reminder to stop procrastinating.
Too many of you spend so much time pondering new ideas that you miss the opportunities. Let’s make 2026 a year of “no regrets” and consider yourself an artist with a blank canvas, plenty of brushes, and lots of paint in every color!
Jasmine Star recently posted five truths that hit harder the older you get. One of them really hit home for me:
“Being ready is a myth. You start. You suck. You figure it out. You get better.”
How about starting the new year out with a look at last year’s business, what worked, and what didn’t? You don’t need to get overly analytical, but start by analyzing your definition of success.
The younger you are in business, the more focused you are on revenue. Whereas getting older, success is more defined by a client’s satisfaction with your work and things that make you smile!
And if last year was mediocre, then what are you missing to make 2026 your best year?
- Is it time to diversify into another specialty?
- Is it time to partner with 2-3 local vendors or photographers with other specialties?
- People like buying products from companies they perceive as giving back to the community. Are you active in your community?
- Are there skills you need to expand to better meet your clients’ needs?
Last but not least, if you’re feeling a little lackluster, what was your dream/vision when you started your business? Maybe it’s time to make a change in your journey and head in a new direction. You can’t create images that tug at people’s heartstrings if your own heart isn’t in it!
Most important of all, remember it takes a village, and your network is there to help you focus your passion and your skills. Stop feeling like you have to wait until everything is exactly right to make your next move to grow.
Remember, growth only happens outside your comfort zone!
